Signs of Termite Infestation

Winged Termites

Winged termites are a common sign of an infestation. If you notice them flying insider your house, there are termites somewhere. One more point to note: winged termites are similar to ants, so make sure you do not confuse the two.

If you have any doubts, you can capture the winged termite in a small jar or a plastic bag. Take this to a pest control company, and they will confirm if the creature is a termite or not.

Mud Tubes

Mud tubes are another common sign of infestation. Termites are used to humidity and so create dirty tunnels in order to protect themselves from the outside dryness. Doing so also increases their security and travelling into the outer world is made easier for them.

Notice the walls of your house and the areas close to the foundation. These are the most probable places for mud tubes. If you come across any, cut them open. You should notice worker termites inside, which can be identified by their small, translucent bodies. Even if you do not notice any termites, but the mud tube is there, it does not mean that the infestation is gone.

Wooden Structures

This termite infestation sign is not visible until the very end. Observe your wooden structures, particularly at the edges. If you notice cracks, you might have drywood termites in your home. As for subterranean termites, they hollow out the wooden structures and leave behind soil or dried mud inside.

Drywood termites also create holes in your furniture or the walls. These holes are used for discarding their waste. Should you come across this, you might notice piles of fecal pellets around them.

Walls and Wall Coverings

In some cases, termites may also damage your walls and wallpaper. Study your walls and if the covering has been ripped off or sunk inside. If termites have been burrowing holes in the walls, they might depress inside or show apparent ripples.

Termites can also create small holes in your plaster walls. Look around for these; you will usually find them filled up with mud.

Mildew Scent

If the termite infestation in your house is huge, you may observe a musty smell or mildew scent where they have been at work.
